"228" a spark of freedom, self determination?

Today it's holiday in Taiwan and I'm at home. Couple of colleagues in ITE told me yesterday that I don't need to go to work as it's national holiday in Taiwan. I asked why? What's the importance, I didn't get clear answer(May be because of language problem).
What makes 2/28 so important in Taiwan history and politics?

On the same day of year 1947, the Nationalist Government which was ruling both mainland China & Taiwan (Initially, the Taiwanese accepted the Nationalist Government control of Taiwan after the Japanese surrender in 1945, without much resistance) massacred thousands of Taiwanese people. The people of Taiwan were always suppressed & exploited politically, economically & socially during the colonial rule.

On February 27, 1947 a policeman of the Taiwan (Formosa) Monopoly Bureau saw a woman selling smuggled cigarettes on the streets of the capital, Taipei. When he tried to seize her tray and money, she pulled away, and he struck her a crashing blow on the head with his revolver butt. She died at his feet. An angry mob gathered, and the police shot into the crowd, killing one person and wounding others. Forthwith a year and a half of gathering hatred for an inefficient, autocratic, corrupt administration exploded into unarmed demonstrations against the mainland Chinese.

The rioting which followed was not consciously revolutionary but was against the hated monopoly police which symbolized for the people the government's exploitation of their island. Unarmed processions marched to the government offices to demand punishment of the policemen, compensation for the dead and wounded, and dismissal of the head of the tobacco monopoly. They beat to death two policemen in front of the tobacco monopoly's office and burned the stocks of tobacco. Police guarding the Governor's office raked the crowd with machine-gun fire without provocation.

China put down the revolt with brutal repression, terror, and massacre. Mainland soldiers and police fired first killing thousands indiscriminately; then, more selectively, hunted down and jailed or slaughtered students, intellectuals, prominent business men, and civic leaders.

The Protest by Taiwanese people continued and the killing of innocent people, students and prominent people in the society also continued by KMT soldiers. The KMT soldiers massacred 28,000 citizens, first indiscriminately and then systematically targeting community leaders.

On the anniversary of the 228 Incident, it is prudent to ponder the consequences of "political integration with China." First, Taiwan's democracy will be dismantled, just as the Goddess of Freedom was quickly toppled in Beijing. Freedom of expression, religion and assembly will be suppressed. Second, all private property will be confiscated. The standard of living will plunge to the level of the Chinese people. Finally, life under CPC rule will be devoid of dignity. The life of every citizen will be at the mercy of the CPC's(Communist Party Of China) coercion.

If Taiwan were to fall into China's grasp, peacefully or otherwise, Beijing's ambitions for hegemony over East Asia and beyond would get a hefty boost. PLA strategists are already openly discussing a war with the US. In such a conflict, Taiwanese youth will be drafted into the PLA and forced to fight on the wrong side of history. Do the people of Taiwan really wish to fight for the hegemony of China and against the forces of democracy and freedom?

If the people of Taiwan want a bright future, then the goal should not be "a future `one China.'" A bright future can only come from an independent existence apart from China. And this is what Taiwan's President Mr.Chen Shui-bian said it openly and abolished the National Unification Council (NUC) and National Unification Guidelines (Guidelines)on 27th February 2006.

God bless Taiwan and give courage to Taiwan people and government to save it's freedom, dignity & sovereignty.

Back on Track... Hurray!!!

Hurray things are back to normal now. Thanks for helping & supporting me directly & indirectly. Thanks to my dad, my brother & my freinds.

Helpless........

Have you ever felt yourself helpless? Have you ever felt, you can't do anything even if you have everything? Have you ever felt it is out of your reach even though you have it? Have you ever felt everything is going wrong with you?
I'm sure, everyone passes through such kind of situations in their life. What a man can do in such situations? Nothing. But you can pray God & just hope for the best.

Something similar happened to me yesterday and was in lot of mental tension & worried. The worst thing is, I indirectly involved my brother & father in this. They were worried. What makes me feel bad is they were worried because of me. My friend came to know about it today. I just hoped for the best. Prayed God to forgive me for troubling (with my worries) my younger brother & my dad & my friend. My friend's words really made me feel relax.

I have already spent one day like this. Just now I felt things are going to be smooth again after speaking to Boss. So if sometimes something went wrong and we feel we can't do
anything, just pray god and hope for the best. Speak to your friend (a good or best friend who can understand you ), that gives you emotional, psychological support & gives you strength. A friend is really a wonderful gift from God to us.
Thank you God.

Sabjiwaalaa.. The Vegetable Merchant

This is the shop from where I generally buy vegetables in Hsinchu. I do not understand his language (He speaks Mandarin) and he don't know English either.
But this old man sells vegetables in very competitive price & and I have always found his prices are lesser than any other shop in my locality in Hsinchu. Here the interesting thing is, he knows that I'm foreigner & also he knows that I do not understand his language. But he always gives me right price. I have found him very honest.
As he do not understand English, I have to point to different vegetables I want to buy And put them in the basket and give it to him for weighing. The funny part & interesting situation comes now. After he weighs all vegetable I brought, I just ask him "How much do I need to pay?". He murmurs something in his language. Then I just look at him & smile :) . He raises his finger to tell how much I need to give. That also does not work, because his method is different. If he raise one finger it indicates 100NT$ & if he raise 2 fingers then it indicates 200NT$ . If it's exactly 100 or 200NT$ that doesn't matter ( it'll not happen most of the times ). So finally I'll take out 200 or 300 bucks from my valet and hold in front of him and he'll take exact money and returns me back the exact change.
Here what impresses me about this man is his "HONESTY". Even today whenever I pass in front of his shop he just looks at me & gives a smile. A smile with full of warm welcome.

SORRY.....

Sometimes little comments or actions can hurt or offend others. Heavy workloads and stress may keep us from seeing how our actions make others feel. Sometimes even if you have not intended to hurt anyone, your joke or fun may hurt someone terribly.
The same thing happened yesterday to my best friend. She was so down and depressed on that comment. I never thought I could ever hurt her. I really felt guilty for the situation ( even though I didn't mean it in reality). May be I'm very bad in commenting. God help me & give me some wisdom so that I couldn't repeat it again.
But I honestly apologized and brought back things on track.

How can we apologize when we offend someone. I'm just trying to put them in my own way:
These little things can add up & become a conflict & finally it may damage the relationship. It's hard to apologize or we have too much pride or we feel ashamed to do so. But let me tell you, when you offend you must apologize honestly ( sometimes even if you have no intentions to offend ) . This will make your relationships to grow stronger. Whenever you offend, just 'Take the responsibility'(you must admit you have done wrong or accept the responsibility if your actions) , 'Explain' (let the person you hurt know that you didn't mean to do harm), 'Show your regret', 'Repair the damage' (apologize to correct the injury, it may be physical or emotional), & finally 'Good timing' (apologize right for tiny matters).
So the bottom line is...
It's not about who "won" or who "lost." It's about keeping a strong friendship/relationship.
